GORP Seeks Applications for Newest Outdoor Startups Cohort

The University of Arkansas’ flagship business incubator, the Greenhouse Outdoor Recreation Project (GORP), which supports startups focused on the outdoor recreation industry, is returning for spring 2026.

Nearly 50 companies have participated in the previous cohorts, ranging from startups focused on cycling and climbing, to outdoor educational services and product manufacturing.

GORP is returning thanks to a $1.4 million grant from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation. This grant will fund the program through the next three years, supporting five cohorts.

“GORP has become synonymous with outdoor-rec startups in Arkansas,” said Phil Shellhammer, executive director of the University of Arkansas Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

“We are excited to see the renewed support from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation to keep supporting founders throughout our state.”

A division of U of A’s Sam M. Walton College of Business, OEI oversees the GORP program.

One of the biggest benefits GORP cohort members receive is up to $15,000 in non-dilutive seed funding per company — funding that doesn't require the owner to give up equity in the company — to be used on any business needs, including marketing, legal fees, branding support and equipment.

Applications are open now and close Feb. 9. The 12-week program runs from March 3 to May 19.

GORP launched with four startups in spring 2022. In the last three years, nearly 50 startups have expanded their businesses through GORP's semiannual cohort program.

Over 85% of GORP companies are still in-market, with the majority growing in sales.

Some notable alumni include Gnargo Bikes, Jane Wick, Slapchalks, LockStop, Yonder Adventure Co., and Sturdy Used Gear.

Founders in previous cohorts have praised GORP for its leadership, access to mentors and the program's ability to provide high-quality interns.

GORP has also supported more than 500 entrepreneurs through its a la carte services, which include workshops, networking events, one-on-one consulting and access to co-working space.
