Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Taking Every Action to Learn Framework

Photo: Submitted

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is a global event in April to raise awareness and prevent sexual violence. It includes education, community action and policy change.

The Violence Against Women's Act in 1993 led to the creation of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center in 2000, which coordinated efforts and launched SAAM in 2001, symbolizing the national fight against sexual violence.

Since its formal founding, SAAM has changed its focus from raising awareness to focusing on systemic change, prevention and survivor assistance. Each year, fresh themes that cover many facets of sexual violence are introduced, ranging from workplace harassment to campus safety.

Equal Opportunity, Compliance & Title IX is using the acronym T.E.A.L. (Taking Every Action to Learn) to emphasize the importance of ongoing education and engagement around issues related to sexual assault prevention and response.

Taking time to learn about the impact of sexual violence and the importance of consent.

Every person has a role to play in contributing to a safer and more informed community.

Action can include participating in trainings, seeking out resources or sharing information with others.

To help promote Teal Tuesday, Equal Opportunity, Compliance & Title IX has placed teal ribbons and stickers in various locations around campus. Members of the U of A community can stop by any of the following locations to pick up a teal ribbon:

  • Administration Building lobby
  • Silas Hunt Hall
  • Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education (Arkansas Union, 4th floor)
  • Mullins Library
  • Pat Walker Health Center

On April 16, the U of A Sexual and Relationship Violence Center is hosting a "Care-Aoke" event open to all campus. Learn more about all Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) events at the U of A.
