Lunch Buddy Mentoring is an exciting service‑learning opportunity at the U of A that gives college students the chance to mentor local elementary‑aged students twice a week. Mentors spend time talking, encouraging and building connections at the lunch table to help promote prosocial behaviors and strengthen students' peer relationships.
The program is open to students of all majors, with the opportunity to earn three credit hours by serving as a consistent mentor and completing course assignments. Mentors are required to participate in a screening interview, brief training and a criminal background check. Reliable transportation and a two-hour time block twice weekly during school lunch time (roughly 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) is also required. Drive time to and from the school is included in the two-hour-per-day time block. Additionally, mentors are required to be of undergrad standing with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
It's a fun, meaningful way to get involved, build leadership skills and gain empathy. Join Lunch Buddy Mentoring today!
The course is instructed by Dr. Cavell, professor of psychological sciences, and Jessica Rice.
